SungKyunKwan Scandal Episode 1

[Spoiler Alert]

Episode Recap.

The scene starts with someone writing the final words in a book and the viewer is then given an aerial view of Joseon dynasty korea. A quick view of the university and its students is given, followed by the outside and finally in a bookshop. In the shop, a customer, a university student is anxious to get his answer script, finally the main heroine arrives, Yoon Hee, disguised as a man (it is really super obvious), has accidentally dropped the book, the student panics but she asks for 30 minutes, in that time, she writes out the whole book by memory.

The scene shifts to the main Hero, Lee Seon Joon who is busy studying, (he is a very intelligent man), but someone throws and egg at him. His friend comes by and offers to help clean it up, as the guy is reaching for his hair, Seon Joon grabs his hand, knowing that the friend only wants his hair to make a brush in attempts to pass the exam. His friend then begs him for 3 strands of hair, and shows him all the strands he has collected, he grabs it and lets the wind blow it away. Meanwhile,Yoon Hee is asked by the shopkeeper if she wants to earn more money, he shows her all the answer scripts that has been written for the exam. She refuses to be a substitute exam taker as it goes against 2 of her principles, lying to officials and stealing from other people's rice bowls. As she leaves, two giseangs try to attract her attention, thinking she is a handsome man, they fail obviously and seek to get advice from their senior.

Yoon Hee changes back into womans clothes, but when she gets home, her house is being raided by 'loan sharks', they demand payment and she promises them she will pay back the money no matter what. She goes the shopkeeper and tells him she'll try out the substitute test taker job. The exam is officiated and here we get a glimpse of what people of those times would go through to do well in the exam. In the hall (which anyone can enter freely) she mistakenly goes to Seon Joon's place, thinking he is the customer. He threatens to report her, but she explains that she has to pay for medicine for her brother and repay debts too. He goes on to call the official and blames everyone, even the official for defiling the exam hall, they find out he is the ministers son and the whole place is cleared. After that the exam goes on. He hands in his paper and the examiners are impressed but they ask him if the words on his coat was a 'new way of cheating'. In fact those words were written by Yoon Hee as he was busy answering his paper.

He chases Yoon Hee (who is still trying to smuggle the answers to the customer) around town and bumps into a group of seniors, he makes enemies with the leader In Soo and continues to chase her. She changes into her girls clothes again and he looses her. Back home, Yoon Hee finds out that her mother has 'sold' her to the minister that loaned them the money, her mother scolds her for helping others cheat, reminding her of her position as a woman. She begs her to stops dressing up as a man. The next day she goes to the minister, she tries to beg for more time and uses sun zu's strategy, but this only makes the guy want her more, the ministers son, In Soo (the senior) is unhappy with her attitude towards his father. He gets his goons to try and rape her, but a man Jae Shin helps her out and saves her. She thanks him but he asks her to leave him alone.

Still insistent on finding her, Seon Joon goes out to look for her himself after his servant fails to. Yong Ha (one of the seniors) offers to help him and gives him a tip off. Before that, eh threatened the shopkeeper to keep quiet. To get more money, Yoon Hee agrees to deliver some illegal books, the man turns out to be Seon Joon and immediately the officials come. They run away, it turns out the senior Seon Joon offended planned it all out. The episode ends with Seon Joon and Yoon Hee trying to hide from the officials.

For a first episode, it is very action packed, not the best thing to do especially when your viewers are trying to familiarize themselves with the characters. Seon Joon could do a little better with the expressions and In Soo just plays the typical villian role. I like Yong Ha as there is that mix of playfulness yet you know he's not all just good looks, he has some brain in there. I am taken back by the part where Yoon Hee declares her principles proudly to the shopkeeper but ends up breaking them and even enjoying the spoils to a certain extent, normally the character would stick to his/her principles to the end, if the writer is trying to put a twist to it, it would have been the wrong place to do it. It just makes the character weaker and less appealing. Nevertheless i found the episode quite entertaining after grasping what was happening. Hope the following episodes will be good too, hoping this will turn out to be a worthwhile drama. There is a lot of hype on it currently because of Mickey.

Sungkyunkwan Scandal

It's on my TO WATCH DURING THE HOLIDAYS LIST.

The most anticipated korean drama for the ending of the year, it reminds me of hana kimi, it'll just be high school in the Joseon Era, and a mix of boys over flowers in it too.

Sypnosis:

A new historical drama setting, Sungkyunkwan (成均館)!!

Everyone knows Sungkyunkwan, the highest educational agency of the Joseon era, but no one knows it well. It has always been a background to a story, but this time Sungkyunkwan itself takes center stage. Sungkyunkwan was more than an academy. It was also the site of political feuds where people posted writings on walls in a life-risking attempt to speak to the king and where officials desperately tried to catch the culprits.

But most of all, it was a place of vibrant youth where students strove to put friendship and love before the stringent rules of the academy.

For the first time, a period series sheds light on the 500 year old Korean academic institute of Sungkyunkwan.

Intense youth, coming of age youth drama

This is the story of Yunhee, who believes there's no one to trust in the world except for herself, and three men she encounters, Seonjun, the arrogant dogmatist, Jaesin, the rebel and Yongha, the cynic.

She enters Sungkyunkwan as a pupil and the story is her journey of growth and reaching the state of "Sungkyun (harmony)."

The strong, vivid characters make a colorful storyline which will be empathized with by young viewers and also shared by adults who look back on their young years. It will an encouraging, motiviating series to any and all viewers.

Woman disguised as man in Joseon!

Can she pull this off? She is excited and nervous. She must survive at Sungkyunkwan without getting caught, without revealing her identity.

Men and women were strictly divided socially during the Confucianist Joseon era and Sungkyunkwan was off limits to women. Kim Yunhee ventures into this all male institute. She will die if she is caught.

Her survival story is studded with misunderstanding and incidents.

The tension is unbearable! She needs to hide and there are those who want to unveil her secret. They chase after each other.

There's also heartrending love. This love story questions the essence of love.

Number of episodes: 16

Date Aired: 30/8/2010

According to my calculations, since they're showing two episodes each week, it'll be completed by 8 weeks and so 2 months. I'll wait till then to watch the whole thing in one go. I watched a bit of the first episode, due to a dumb error of mine (clicking at the last part instead of the 4th part) i watched a bit of the beginning and the end of the first episode, what i've seen so far is quite good. If you're a fan of Mickey Yoochun he's the star in this series, he plays the calm, cold main lead who'll most certainly soften once he gets to know the main heroine. The girl, in my opinion looks better disguised as a guy than when she dresses up as a girl.

Final Fantasy 13

Has anyone out there played this game yet? I watched the trailers on Youtube and watched IGN do a review of the game and it looks good, especially since there's lots of the nice effects when you summon, the fight controls look good too, like how you have to pre-plan the roles of eac character in a fight, and you can switch too, looks complicated but cool! =D. Though, i have this feeling that the story and even the characters are very similar to FF7, i know lightning the main lead lady is supposed to be the female Cloud, correct me if i'm wrong. And I also see lots of similarities like the sign they have on their arm, the bad guy has silver hair = sephiroth. Lightning looses her sis, = cloud loosing his best friend. Zack. Vanilla reminds me of Yuffie. I'll give them a break because it's hard not to repeat some characters after making 13 wait, 14 of these games. And the lead character is a girl, something that's not common in Final Fantasy, because so far, before this, there was only 1,  Terra Branford from FF 6.

Listen and watch!!

Unfortunately i cannot do a review of this game because i DO NOT HAVE A PS 3 and the game costs like RM 200 or something, no fat chance for me.

Electric Violins are so cool!

Did you know there are electric violins? You may say "yeah, it makes sense that they exist," but did you know know? like really thought about it and concieved the image in your mind? Fine, i'm beating around the bush anyway. A couple of nights ago, i was into my Final fantasy/ instrumental music craze again and i stumbled upon this guy as he did a rendition of the FF13 battle theme. I thought it was four guys doing one song but no, it's just him! I introduce to you Jason Yang.

I'm not exactly a musical kind of person, but i am so amazed by how he breaks down a song into different parts, plays those parts seperately on his electric violin and loops them and wallah, soon he play the song just like the original. To help illustrate this, watcg a few videos.

And if you wanna check out more of his music go to:

This is a mix of "I got a feeling" by the black eyed peas and "Don't stop believing"

The 3 Sentences

Taken from the book "When a woman meets Jesus"

"Several years ago, a friend of mine recommended a wonderful book called streams of Mercy, by Dr. Mark Rutland, president of Global Servants Ministries. He writes about a survey in which thousands of Americans were asked what they would most like someone say to them. Here are the top responses:

1. "I Love you"
2. "I forgive you"
3. "Supper's ready"

I love the observation Mark Rutland makes about these three unique responses"

"It dawned on me. The whole gospel. (Good News)Jesus stands behind the communion table with his nail-scarred hands outstretched and the light of his mercy in his eyes. His voice, His words meet us with healing warmth as we drag out water logged burdens up the rocky shoreline from life's most chilling seas. "I Love you" he whispers. "I forgive you. Come and dine."

It's really interesting how the words that some people are so desperate to hear is basically, at the core, at the very bottom of the foundations of Chrisitianity what Jesus has come to give us.

And this is a personal observation, my lecturer said that the one constant thing in the world is change. (oxymoron) Yea, we human like to change things, change this, that and everything else. Even i also like to see some changes happening, but then when i come to God, i thank Him that He never changes. He is the same yesterday, today and forevermore. And that is comforting because with change so much is happening, i get confused too, but God is my solid rock on which i can rely on.
